Greg Siple
artist, photographer, and book designer extraordinaire
Inspired by his father’s 1930s cycling stories and scrapbooks, Greg became a passionate cyclist, riding his first 100-mile day at age 15 in 1961. In 1962, he and his father Charles established the annual 210-mile, two-day Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV) that later grew into a 6,000-rider event. [Greg co-authored The Mighty TOSRV book with spouse June Siple in 1986.] He developed a lifelong interest in the visual arts and graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1967, majoring in Advertising Design, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1968. Greg and June Siple were the first to ride from Alaska to Argentina on the Hemistour Bicycling Expedition 1972-1975. As one of four co-founders of Bikecentennial76, later renamed Adventure Cycling Association, Greg served for 40 years as the organization’s artist, illustrator, and photographer, retiring in 2017. He co-produced America’s Bicycle Route, The Story of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, and has designed and/or done illustrations for numerous other publications. An inspiration to riders everywhere, he was my consultant, co-producer, photographer, artist, and designer for this book. He lives with June in Missoula, Montana, obsessively drawing and shooting way too many photos.
